This page covers the most common problems when using BPMKeyFinder.com — file upload failures, unexpected BPM results, incorrect key detection, and slow or incomplete analysis — with step-by-step fixes for each.

Quick Check First

Before working through individual sections, confirm these three things:

1. Browser. Are you using Google Chrome on a desktop or laptop? Chrome provides the most consistent Web Audio API performance for file decoding and audio analysis. Firefox and Safari work in most cases. Mobile browsers and in-app browsers (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok) may have restricted file access or inconsistent Web Audio support.

2. File format. Is your file in a supported format? BPMKeyFinder.com accepts MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC (.m4a), and OGG. Files in other formats (AIFF, WMA, OPUS, MP4 video, etc.) must be converted before upload.

3. File size. Very large files take longer to analyse. FLAC and WAV files at full quality can be several hundred megabytes — these take significantly longer to decode than compressed MP3 files of the same track.


Problem 1 — File Won’t Upload or Load

Symptom

The file selection dialog does nothing, the upload bar does not appear, or the tool shows an error after selecting a file.

Causes and fixes

Cause A — Unsupported file format. The most common cause. AIFF, WMA, OPUS, MP4 (video), and other formats are not supported.

Fix: Convert your file to MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, or OGG using a free converter such as FFmpeg, Audacity, or an online audio converter. Re-upload the converted file.

Cause B — File is corrupted or incomplete. A partially downloaded or corrupted audio file may fail to decode even if the extension is correct.

Fix: Re-download or re-export the file from its original source. Verify the file plays correctly in a local media player before uploading.

Cause C — JavaScript or Web Audio API not supported. The tool requires JavaScript and Web Audio API support. If JavaScript is disabled or your browser does not fully support the Web Audio API, the tool will not function.

Fix: In Chrome, go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → JavaScript → ensure JavaScript is allowed. Update your browser to the latest version.

Cause D — Browser extension blocking the tool. Ad blockers, script blockers, or privacy extensions (uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, Ghostery) can interfere with the tool’s file processing scripts.

Fix: Temporarily disable browser extensions and reload the page. If the tool works, whitelist bpmkeyfinder.com in the relevant extension’s settings.


Problem 2 — Analysis is Very Slow

Symptom

The analysis progress indicator runs for a long time (more than 30 seconds) without completing.

Causes and fixes

Cause A — Large or high-quality file. FLAC and 24-bit WAV files contain significantly more data than MP3 files of the same track. A 10-minute lossless FLAC file may take 30–60 seconds to decode and analyse on a standard laptop.

Fix: For faster results, upload a high-quality MP3 (320 kbps) rather than a lossless format. The analysis quality is not significantly reduced — key and BPM detection does not require lossless audio.

Cause B — Very long file. Files longer than 15–20 minutes require proportionally more decoding and analysis time.

Fix: Export or trim the most representative 3–5 minutes of the track and upload that section. BPM and key are typically consistent enough across a representative section to produce reliable results.

Cause C — Low-powered device. Older phones, budget tablets, and underpowered laptops decode and process audio more slowly.

Fix: Use a desktop or laptop computer with Chrome for the fastest analysis. Keep other browser tabs and applications closed to maximise available processing resources.


Problem 3 — BPM Result Seems Wrong

Symptom

The detected BPM feels double, half, or simply incorrect compared to your perception of the track’s tempo.

Causes and fixes

Cause A — Half-time or double-time result (most common). This is the most frequent BPM issue and is almost always not a tool error — it reflects genuine ambiguity in the track’s rhythmic structure.

If the result is double what you expected: the algorithm detected the underlying subdivisions (eighth notes or sixteenth notes) rather than the quarter-note beat. The track is likely at half the shown tempo. Check the half-time candidate in the results.

If the result is half what you expected: the algorithm locked onto the half-time feel rather than the actual beat. The track is likely at double the shown tempo. Check the double-time candidate in the results.

How to confirm the correct BPM: tap along with the track at what feels like the quarter-note pulse (the main beat you would nod your head to). Compare your tap rate to the candidates listed. The matching candidate is the correct BPM.

Cause B — Track has variable tempo. Live recordings, classical performances, and some electronic music with manual tempo automation do not have a fixed BPM. Autocorrelation assumes a consistent pulse and will return an average that may not match any specific moment in the track.

Fix: BPM detection tools are not reliable for music with intentional tempo variation. If you need the BPM at a specific moment, use the tap tempo method on that section.

Cause C — Track has no clear rhythmic pulse. Ambient, drone, free jazz, and unmetered music have no regular beat for the algorithm to identify. A returned BPM value for these tracks is an artefact of the analysis and has no musical meaning.


Problem 4 — Key Detection Seems Wrong

Symptom

The detected key does not match what you expect or know about the track.

Causes and fixes

Cause A — Track is in a relative key (C major vs A minor, etc.). This is the most common key detection confusion and is often not an error. C major and A minor share exactly the same pitch classes. The chromagram analysis identifies pitch class energy but cannot always determine which note is the tonal centre. On the Camelot Wheel, C major (8B) and A minor (8A) share the same number and are harmonically compatible — for mixing purposes, this distinction usually does not matter.

To confirm: play the track and listen to the final cadence or the note that feels most like “home.” That note is the tonic and identifies the correct key.

Cause B — Track changes key. If the track modulates between two keys, the chromagram will blend the pitch class content of both. The detected key may be neither of the actual keys, or the one that dominates more of the track’s duration.

Fix: Export the section of the track in the key you need (intro, verse, or chorus) and analyse that section separately.

Cause C — Track is in a mode other than major or minor. Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and other modes are not well represented by standard major/minor key profiles. A Dorian track may be detected as the natural minor key on the same root, or as the relative major. Modal music requires ear verification.

Cause D — File is too short. Clips under 30 seconds may not contain enough harmonic content for reliable analysis. Upload the full track or at least a 60-second representative section.

Cause E — Low confidence score. If the confidence score displayed is low, the chromagram analysis found no strongly dominant key — the pitch class distribution was too uniform or too ambiguous. Treat the result as a suggestion and verify by ear.


Problem 5 — Tool Does Not Load at All

Symptom

The tool interface does not appear or shows a blank area.

Causes and fixes

Cause A — JavaScript is disabled. The tool requires JavaScript. Enable JavaScript in your browser settings (see Problem 1, Cause C above).

Cause B — Browser extension blocking the interface. See Problem 1, Cause D above.

Cause C — Outdated browser. Update your browser to the latest version. In Chrome: Settings → Help → About Google Chrome → update if available.

Cause D — Hard refresh needed. Press Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) to force a complete page reload from the server.
