What Is Tempo?

Tempo describes how fast or slow music moves. In modern music production and digital workflows, it is commonly represented numerically as BPM, or beats per minute.

For example:

  • 60 BPM = 60 beats per minute
  • 90 BPM = 90 beats per minute
  • 120 BPM = 120 beats per minute
  • 180 BPM = 180 beats per minute

At 60 BPM, one quarter-note beat lasts exactly one second. At 120 BPM, each quarter-note beat lasts half a second.

How Tempo Is Converted to Milliseconds

The basic formula for calculating the duration of a quarter-note beat is:

Milliseconds per beat = 60,000 Γ· BPM

At 120 BPM:

60,000 Γ· 120 = 500 ms

So one quarter note lasts 500 milliseconds.

From that value, other note lengths can be calculated.

Understanding Note Lengths

A tempo does not describe only the spacing between quarter-note beats. Once the BPM is known, you can calculate the duration of many rhythmic note values.

A half note lasts twice as long as a quarter note. An eighth note lasts half as long, while a sixteenth note lasts one quarter as long.

Dotted and triplet values use different rhythmic relationships. These become especially useful when synchronizing effects or programming rhythms that do not fall directly on straight quarter-note divisions.

BPM, Tempo, and Time Signature Are Different

BPM tells you how quickly beats occur.

A time signature tells you how those beats are grouped into measures.

For example, music at 120 BPM could be in 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, or another meter.

In 4/4, you might count:

1 – 2 – 3 – 4

In 3/4:

1 – 2 – 3

The BPM can remain the same even though the rhythmic organization changes.
