2. BPM Detection Accuracy

The BPM detection algorithm uses onset detection and autocorrelation to identify the dominant beat period of an uploaded audio file. For music with a clear, consistent rhythmic structure — electronic dance music, pop, rock, and hip-hop with a steady drum track — accuracy is typically within ±1 BPM.

Users should be aware that:

Half-time and double-time results are not errors. Many music genres create genuine BPM ambiguity. A track at 140 BPM may return a result of 70 BPM because the groove is built around a half-time feel. A track at 75 BPM may return 150 BPM because fast rhythmic subdivisions create a perceived double-time pulse. Both values are mathematically correct representations of the same rhythmic content — the tool lists both candidates so you can select the musically appropriate interpretation.

Tempo variation reduces accuracy. Tracks with intentional rubato, gradual tempo drift, or abrupt tempo changes do not have a fixed BPM and the autocorrelation-based detection will return an average that may not accurately represent any specific moment in the track.

Sparse rhythmic content reduces accuracy. Ambient, drone, and unmetered music have insufficient onset events for reliable beat tracking. Returned BPM values for these tracks should be treated with caution.


3. Key Detection Accuracy and Limitations

The key detection algorithm extracts a chromagram from the uploaded audio and matches it against the 24 major and minor key profiles of the Krumhansl-Schmuckler model using cosine similarity. For popular music genres with clear tonal content, accuracy is typically above 80%.

Users should be aware that:

Key detection is not infallible. Approximately 1 in 5 results on popular music genres will be incorrect. For critical professional applications — particularly live DJ set planning where an incorrect key transition will be audible to the audience — all key detection results should be verified by ear before use.

Relative key ambiguity. Major keys and their relative minor keys share the same pitch classes. A track in C major and a track in A minor have identical pitch class distributions. The algorithm returns the most statistically plausible interpretation — but the distinction between C major and A minor requires listening to identify the tonal centre. For harmonic mixing purposes, this distinction often does not matter — C major (8B) and A minor (8A) share the same Camelot number.

Key changes within tracks. A track that modulates between two keys will produce a chromagram blending both. The detected key will tend toward whichever key dominates more of the track’s duration and may not match either key precisely.

Modal music. Tracks in Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Lydian, and other modes are not accurately modelled by standard major and minor key profiles. The detected key for modal music may match the natural minor or major key on the same root rather than the actual mode.

Very short files. Clips under 30 seconds may not contain sufficient harmonic content for reliable key identification.


4. Results Are Estimates — Verify for Critical Use

The BPM and key results returned by this tool are estimates produced by algorithmic analysis. They should be treated as useful starting points — not definitive facts.

For casual use — personal collection tagging, practice session preparation, songwriting reference — the tool’s results are typically sufficient without additional verification.

For critical professional use — live DJ performance, commercial remix production, official music metadata submission — all BPM and key results should be verified by ear before reliance. An incorrect key result used in a live transition without verification will produce an audible harmonic clash in front of an audience.
